Another option for panning with a monopod is to place the pointed end of the monopod between your feet (shoulder width apart). Then lean the camera out to a full arm’s length away from your body. Now level up your camera so that it will capture the horizon that you wish. Lock your arms out straight and pivot about your hips and shoulders, swinging the camera like a pendulum. Because the weight of your camera is at a wide this techniques makes for effective pans. However, it is a bit harder to control the speed and levelness of rotation (Image 11.6).

Image 11.6To build upon the first method for panning with a monopod, you can swing a camera about your body’s center of gravity much like a pendulum. Indeed, this pan pivots the camera at a larger radius than that described in the previous image, and thus interacts with the field of view differently. Try both methods and explore how your camera passes over the various elements within your pans
